Introducing...

Martin Langford

Gallerina would like to welcome to the gallery the wonderful printmaker, Martin Langford. If you have not been fortunate enough to see his etchings first hand in the gallery, there are some examples here.

Martin says, 'My work tends to focus on the environment, the evolution of man and his material wealth, the development of bigger and bigger cities, more and more people, cars and industry on the planet and the consequences this has on nature. Some reviews have labelled my work as ´black humour´ but I always try to depict a positive message too - the persistence of nature in recapturing what once belonged to the earth.'

If you would like to see more of Martin's work or for any further information please contact us.

Storm Thorgerson has been designing album cover art for over 35 years. He has designed many of the most famous album covers in history, including Pink Floyd's instantly recognisable Dark Side of the Moon. Many of Thorgerson's classic album covers have become masterpieces in their own right. Thorgerson's designs are noticeable for their surreal elements. He often places objects out of their traditional context, setting them in vast spaces that give them an awkward appearance whilst highlighting their beauty.

Born in Dartford, Kent in 1944, Thorgerson went to school with Roger Waters and Syd Barrett. He studied English and Philosophy at university before going on to complete an MA in Film and Television at the Royal College of Art. His career as an artist began accidentally; around the time of his graduation from the Royal College Pink Floyd were completing their second album A Saucerful of Secrets, when a friend turned down the job of creating its sleeve. With no background in art or graphic design Thorgerson volunteered to step into the fold. Along with his friend Aubrey Powell he set up the British graphic art group Hipgnosis in 1968, they specialised in creative photography for album covers. Many of Thorgerson's album covers were designed before the advent of advanced computer design software, and were created through the use of photography, paint and sculpture.

We have other work by Storm Thorgerson in the gallery so if you would like to see these or for any other information please contact us.

New Steven Lawler painting

Double Cross

Steven Lawler - double cross

Steven Lawler has just been in the gallery to deliver his new piece of work entitiled 'Double Cross'.

Steve says 'Double Cross comes out of my interest in film storyboards and comic books - in the way that a story or part of a story can be told in a sequence of panels. I'm also interested in how the size and shape of panels can dictate the speed at which the eye reads the story – which is actually a way of controlling time. I'm a big fan of 1940's and 50's ' film noir ' crime movies which is where the inspiration for the look and characters in Double Cross comes from. The lynchpin of the whole painting is the butterfly perched on the hand poised ready to dial the telephone – when the hand moves to dial a number the butterfly will flap its wings and the effect of the call will resonate somewhere else in the world or in the case of 'Double Cross', in the final two panels.

James Paterson - commission12th October 2011

Commissions

James Paterson

James Paterson has been busy recently with his commissioned work. These portraits range from small intimate head studies to large scale portraiture like the latest work shown here.

James says "This new portrait is possibly one of my most complicated paintings with a lot of different elements that had to be balanced. The couple (Fritz & Bev) in the painting travelled South America on a motorcycle and the painting is not only of them but of their journey too.

It's always nice to technically experiment and push your work further; however a commissioned portrait is not the safest way to achieve this. After speaking to them I knew they would be very open to new ideas and so I went with my gut and painted without any constraint.

I wanted to capture a sense of movement (but not speed) and so the bike became fractured and I used from their own postcards which acted like markers dotted onto the canvas. On these postcards were images of roads which again added to a sense of travel and movement. One of these postcards depicts a landslide. This was chosen as after talking with them about their trip, you realise how adventurous you must be to embark on a journey of this type. This is not your average package holiday but the rewards are far greater!"

If you would like to see more of James' commissions then please click here, or contact the gallery if you would like further details on how to go about commissioning a piece.

These limited edition prints feature Sam's now infamous characters, "The Mustard's", Ernest Hemingway Mustard and his dear lady wife Violet along with their much loved eccentric friends and pets. Using mixed media, pencil, oil pastels, coloured inks and her own idiomatic techniques, Sam depicts a seaside world of faded ice-cream colours where the breeze is always blowing and life is utterly delicious. With an edition size of 295 Sam says you 'get more picture for your money.'
