Artists » Emma Butler
Emma has been a full time artist for nine years. She specialises in silk hangings and acrylic paintings on paper and canvas. She also freelances as an illustrator.
Emma paints the world around her in a bright and colourful way. She is fascinated by the characters that she sees in everyday life. Emma has travelled extensively in Africa and Australasia and draws upon these memories of people and places when she is creating a new series of paintings.
Painting from memory allows her imagination to take hold and often the results observe a distinct sense of place but with a quirky twist. She also loves the relationship between the sea and land and this is an ongoing theme in her work.
Colour is all important in Emma’s paintings. She uses colour to create a mood or a moment, a time or a place. She loves painting with strong colour combinations that give her creations a real sense of drama. Colour lets her escape reality and allows her to reinvent the world around her. Emma paints with dry acrylic and layers up the colour to create depth in her paintings
Emma’s work always contains a strong narrative. The relationship between text and image is one that she continues to explore. Illustrating children’s books is something she would love to pursue.
